Probing of chirality inMethyloxirane by mass-selective femtosecond multi-photon photoelectron circular dichroism

In this chapter, the chiral molecule Methyloxirane is studied using femtosecond multi-photon ionization at 400 nm in combination with masscorrelated photoelectron coincidence imaging. The ion time-of-flight spectrum and the mass-correlated photoelectron kinetic energy distribution are discussed. The appearance energy of the parent ion and the fragment ion C2H + 4 in multi-photon excitation is reported. Both the parent and the C2H + 4 fragment ion can be formed by four photon excitation at 400 nm. Furthermore, the mass-correlated multi-photon photoelectron circular dichroism effect as a function of photoelectron energy was obtained. The measured circular dichroism effect was found to be dependent on the photoelectron energy. The maximum effect was on the order of 4% and was observed for electrons with kinetic energy of 1-1.5 eV. An asymmetry of less than 1% was observed for electrons with maximum kinetic energy.

Limonene is ionized by circularly polarized 420 nm femtosecond laser pulses. Ion mass and photoelectron energy spectra identify the dominant (2 + 1) multiphoton ionization mechanism, aided by TDDFT calculations of the Rydberg excitations.
